Fashion Show Casting Call

As the planning and preparing of the annual fashion show continues, the STJ Fashion Club begins their model search. The first casting was held on Tuesday, February 22nd in the donovan community room, where about 50 students came to audition for the show. We will be hosting a second casting call after spring break on March 14th from 3pm-6:30pm in the UC Commons. After both the castings, we will hold a call back where the show's designers will be present to give their input on the models and choose who they want to model their clothing line. We encourage anyone who is interested to come tryout or to get involved in the show anyway possible for a chance to gain hands-on experience with fashion show production.

Fashion Through The Decades

On Thursday, February 17th, the STJ Fashion Club hosted "Fashion Through The Decades," an event in honor of Black History Month. The club prepared a slide show that highlighted Black fashion icons, ranging from the 1920's up until the present. Held in the D'Angelo Center's Organization Lounge, there was lounge-style seating and "mocktails" were served to the members and attendees. After the slide show was presented, the members had a discussion about black fashion icons, black fashion influences, and how they are reflected in current fashions that we see today. We were glad we were able to celebrate Black History Month in a way that reflects both our interests and our history, as well as, the past and present.

Show Me Your Walk

On Tuesday, February 8th, the STJ Fashion Club hosted their first event of the semester. This modeling workshop, "Show Me Your Walk", was organized to teach students techniques used on fashion show runways, focusing on walking, posing and style. The event was run by three students that have been in the Fashion Club and Fashion Shows for the past four years. We spread the word of the event asking anyone who's interested in trying out for this semester's fashion show to come, to increase their chances of making the cut. The event had a good turn out and the students seemed to benefit from the pointers and tips given to them. We hope they had fun and were able to improve, so at tryouts they can work the runway when we ask, Show me your walk...

A Passion . . . A Talent . . . An Interest . . .

The St. John's University Fashion Club has been around for about 5 years now and I have been on the executive board for 4. I first joined the club during my freashman year at St. John's and at the time the board was looking for new e-board members. So, I decided to join the board and 4 years later, I am Vice President. Being part of the club has been an extra-curricular activity I really enjoy. The club offers members a chance to embrace all aspects of fashion and the fashion industry with other students who share this interest. Although St. John's University does not offer any fashion majors, there are many students who wish to persue a career in the fashion industry. While these students are recieving academic knowledge, in majors that include Public Relations, Business, Journalism and more, we try to provide them with experience, information, and networking opportunites dealing with fashion and the fashion industry.

As the Spring semester begins, the Fashion Club prepares for a new semester. After showcasing the club at the St. John's Univeristy Spring Semester Activities Fair, we recruited new members to join us at our first general body meeting to learn more about the club. Our first meeting had to be postponed due to the weather, but will be taking place tomorrow, February 3rd, on campus. At the meeting we will discuss the purpose and benefits of being a member, our upcoming events for the semester, and of course, the Fashion Show. We also encourage feedback from the members and want to hear what they would like to get out of the club. That way, we can focus on planning events and activites on their interests and likes.

We look forward to a successful and exciting semester!
